We have over 85,000 foreign workers, most of them from Asian countries:\u00a0<\/span><b>Nepal<\/b><span>, Turkey or the Philippines. Workers are attracted by the wages they can get here, while our own are going to western Europe for the same reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fixx's home is 5000 kilometers away in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. In the restaurant where he works as a bartender, he found a chance for a better future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fixx, bartender:<\/b><i><b><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I worked for a year as a busboy and then I learned to make cocktails and everything and my boss gave me money. I send 400, 500 euros a month.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>He's been living in Romania for almost four years and plans to steal the trade for at least that much longer. He dreams of having his own restaurant back home in Nepal.<\/p>\n<p><b>Fixx, bartender:\u00a0<\/b><i>It's very very very very hard. I really miss my mom and I really miss my family.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Fixx has 120 other colleagues in his restaurant chain in Asia and Africa.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span><b>Dragos Petrescu, restaurant chain owner:\u00a0<\/b>Without them, hospitality in Romania, and especially in Europe, would not be able to function. Washing the dishes, piccolo, carrying the food. There are certain services in a restaurant that are taken over by these non-EU workers because Romanians no longer want to do them.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Irish is from the Philippines and works as a masseuse in a salon in the center of the capital. She left two children at home, whom she would have been unable to support on the 300 dollars she would have earned there.<\/p>\n<p><b>Irish, masseuse:<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><i>That's a very big difference. Almost 75% more, double or triple the salary. It's very hard, you have to sacrifice a lot of things, leave them behind, to be able to give them a good future.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Romanian government has raised the ceiling for foreign workers to 100,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The labor shortage, which employers are complaining about, has prompted the government to increase the cap on foreign workers four times in a single year to 100,000.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ioana Matei, Observator reporter:\u00a0<\/b><i>Most foreign employees are from Turkey, over 10,000, while over 9,000 come from Nepal. In third place are those from Moldova. Almost a quarter of foreign employees work in construction. The remaining up to two thirds are in manufacturing, trade and HoReCa.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Oana Botolan Datki, HR Consultant:<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span><i>This is from countries where the wage level is lower, so the wages they can get in Romania are competitive. The same reason Romanians leave to work in other countries.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Yosef Gavriel Peisakh, recruitment agency manager:<\/b><i><span>\u00a0<\/span>In most cases, employers offer free room and board.<\/i>\u00a0<i>They rely on the fact that foreigners come to work for a minimum of two years and do not have to migrate, to leave.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>IT and gaming industry specialists also needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pandemic has also opened up the digital frontiers for specialists who can work from home for companies anywhere in the world. The IT and gaming industries are home to most expats.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ana Pohrib, HR manager gaming company:\u00a0<\/b><i>We are talking about roles for which either Romania has no education system or no history. For example, if we think about business intelligence, it is still difficult to find experts in Romania. We keep in touch with the players, players from all over the world. A native Japanese speaker will always have an advantage.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Forced to run away from<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>the war<\/b>Many Ukrainians arrived in Romania this year with refugee status.
